Many people think of the psalms as light, devotional material. They think of Psalms simply as the book you open to when life is falling apart and trouble surrounds you.
While many of the psalms do deal with suffering, pain, and trials, Psalms is a very prophetic book in nature. Jesus affirms this truth in Luke 24:44 where He states, "These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.”
Many of the psalms give us precise and accurate details concerning God's prophetic plan for the nation of Israel and for this earth (Psalm 2). Psalm 22 gives us prophetic insight into the cross work of Christ with amazing detail.
This series only goes through Psalm 23, giving believers a solid foundation with which to understand the rest of the book. With this foundation, the rest of the book can be readily understood and rightly divided.
